I Would Rather Be Coherent...

One of the things we all share in common are our life's intentions. All of us have a longing to be known in certain ways, to know that our lives are making a difference. These intentions are often expressed in "to be" statements, as in

  • to be a creator of beauty

  • to be a contributor to my community

  • to be a loving family member (husband, wife, son, daughter, etc.)

  • to be a successful author (musician, artist, sculpter)

  • to be financially successful

How do these sound? Pretty good? When one or more of our life intentions are demonstrated in physical reality, our experience is one of "it doesn't get any better than this!"

The mechanics of such demonstrations are pretty simple. In life, you and I take action. Our action always leads to an outcome. When our action produces an outcome that is in keeping with our intention, life is sweet! We experience meaning, satisfaction, harmony and fulfillment. We might call this coherence... everything holds together.

On the other hand, when our action produces an outcome that is NOT in keeping with our intention, we experience what we can call incoherence. The elements of incoherence are frustration, resignation, and cynicism. Life is not so sweet.

At this point, many of us question our intention, with thoughts like, "Maybe I'm not meant to be a successful writer," or "I guess I don't have what it takes to give to my community," and so on. This is a Coaching Moment! We should never question our intention... just simply look at the action, and make an appropriate correction. It is the action that produced the outcome, remember. Our intentions live in us as part of the fabric of who we are, waiting to be joyously expressed!

There are many wonderful coaching tools and skill sets that can support us in consciously moving from incoherence to coherence and a more satisfying life experience. More on these in future notes!
